Here are the highlights from this year’s Tony Awards.
The 79th Tony Awards, celebrated at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night, spread the wealth this year. “Death of a Salesman” collected the most statuettes with six wins, including for best play revival. “Ragtime,” “The Lost Boys” and “Schmigadoon!” each took home four wins. And “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” earned three.
Bess Wohl’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Liberation” was awarded the Tony for best play; “Schmigadoon!” won best new musical; and “Ragtime” won best musical revival.
At 80, John Lithgow became one of the oldest Tony Award winners for his role as the cantankerous, antisemitic children’s author Roald Dahl in “Giant.” Lesley Manville, 70, took home the trophy for best actress in a play for “Oedipus.” And several performers celebrated their first Tony wins: Caissie Levy and Joshua Henry for “Ragtime”; Alden Ehrenreich for “Becky Shaw,” and Shoshana Bean for “The Lost Boys.”
The Tonys arrived after a year of shrinkflation, as Helen Shaw, our chief theater critic put it. Just 11 musicals, both new and revivals, opened this season, compared to 21 in the previous year. Still, the slate of offerings also amounted to an “embarrassment of riches,” she wrote. There was a glittering array of scene-stealing moments in this year’s shows. And productions keep getting starrier as they bet on celebrities to boost ticket sales, both onstage and behind the scenes as co-producers.
The ceremony was hosted by the pop singer-songwriter Pink, who, suspended in air, flipped upside down as Peter Pan, dazzled in feathers for an opening number of “Lady Marmalade” and performed as a vamping Velma Kelly in a “Chicago” anniversary act.
